The xkcd version was a really cool concept, except for people that have school on Friday (which is, I believe, everyone)

I tried to see if it was possible to make a schedule that accommodates school, so I thought about it and came up with something passable.

School takes up a large chunk of the day, making it hard to change your schedule much at all - I was restricted by increments of 1:30 on weekdays at the most, but the schedule I managed to come up with has its merits, I guess.

So using 7am~5pm as the standard time for school (the time it takes to get ready and the time it takes to get home) and an 8-hour sleepytime per day, this is what I came up with. Between every weekday sleepytime (yes I’m going to keep calling it sleepytime), you have 17.5 waking hours. Starting the weekend, you have a choice (because people have lives on the weekend besides sleeping at the optimum time). On the chart, the lavender border around each purple section represents the possible times to fall asleep/wake up - note that saturday gets the most possible waking hours :D

Since it doesn’t show on the chart, because I hate putting text in MS Paint, I’ll put the schedule here in order:

Monday
7am-5am : school
6:30pm : sleep

Tuesday
2:30am : wake up
7am-5am : school
8pm : sleep

Wednesday
4am : wake up
7am-5pm : school
9:30pm : sleep

Thursday
5:30am : wake up
7am-5pm : school
11pm : sleep

Friday
7am-5pm : wake up/school
*8pm~12:30am : fall asleep

Saturday
*4am~8:30am : wake up
*9:30pm~2am : fall asleep

Sunday
*5:30am~10am : wake up
*5pm~11pm : fall asleep

Monday again
*1am~7am : wake up

*The times with an Asterisk represent a range of time in which you can do it.

To correspond with the chart, red is school, purple is the times you will definitely be asleep, and lavender is the time you could be asleep. The weekends allow you to sleep longer or have a longer day, depending on when you sleep and wake up, but unless you sleep the earliest time on Saturday, Sunday ends up being a shorter day than most.

I spent more time making that chart than thinking about this, so it could use some rethinking/revising. I’m going to try this this year, because my sleeping habits last year consisted of making up hours during class.

It worked well.
